Parvatamma’s new life began with one goat and a big dream!

Parvatamma lives in Govindapalli, Raichur India. Her husband is an agricultural labourer and they have two sons and two daughters. Working on other people’s farms as an agricultural labourer virtually ensured the entire family will remain trapped in extreme poverty and unable to own their own farm land.

Parvatamma joined the Shree Hanumayya Tata Self-Help Group in her community. An active member, she attends all training sessions and and group meetings. Her confidence growing, she requested a loan from the group to help her start an income-generating activity to provide the funds her family needs each month, including ongoing medical expenses for one the children who requires help with a physical disability.

All group members discussed her business plan and agreed to fund her loan. She received a $135 CAD loan and purchased one goat. After paying back the loan Parvatamma took another loan of $340 CAD and grew her venture by purchasing another 3 goats. Parvatamma has continued to expand her business and today has 15 goats and earns about $100 CAD a month. Prudent and focused on her family, Parvatamma savings account at a local bank continues to grow and she saves money for her children's future. To add to the excitement and hope they feel every day, Parvatamma and her husband used some of their increased monthly income to lease agricultural land of their own to farm.
