A thank you that spans generations
LEADERSHIP TEAM MESSAGE
Saying “thank you” is the only thing equal to the responsibility we have to carefully steward the life-transforming resources you shared with more than 886,000 incredibly resilient people in 2023.
When we say “thank you”, we say it on behalf of people who’ve shown immense courage and tenacity to overcome the extreme poverty that has shaped but not defined their lives. And we say “thank you” on behalf of not just one generation, but multiple generations, because when a mother steps out of poverty, so do her children. And when her children become adults, they too will remain free from poverty and so will their children.
So we say “thank you” the best way we know how - by showing you the results of your investment in families and the generational change they are creating with your support.

Transformation today and for generations to come
Wherever families and communities see themselves starting their journey out of extreme poverty, we’re with them. We know our grassroots partners well. We’ve worked with most of them for decades. Our partners know families and their communities well. Their relationship forms the foundation of the transformation you support. In every project, including emergencies, families come first. We work together to support their efforts to transform their circumstances and create the lives they envision.
Women lift their families and communities out of extreme poverty
The health and well-being of women play a pivotal role in determining whether a community can transform and emerge from poverty. Lasting transformation is possible when women have access to health support, small business skill development and resources, and fully participate in decision-making at home and in their communities.

CLEAN WATER & HEALTH SUPPORTS

CLEAN WATER CREATES TRANSFORMATION
Nak remembers the day she gathered her family’s first bucket of clean water from the new hand pump well near her home in Bong Romlet, Cambodia. As the crystal clear water flowed from the pump, years of worry were lifted from Nak’s shoulders and replaced with exciting ideas about how she could transform her family.
Having clean water meant Nak’s children could be healthy enough to attend school, opening up opportunities. Nak could irrigate a vegetable garden, growing enough food to keep her family fed year-round. Excess harvest could be sold at the market, generating a reliable source of income to meet all their needs. Nak’s husband wouldn’t have to make the dangerous journey to neighbouring Thailand to earn a few dollars a day to help support the family. Nak no longer had to work seven days a week digging up cassava roots, earning just ten dollars from dawn to dusk.
Having achieved everything she dreamt about the day clean water entered her life, Nak now has her sights set on expanding her income by making rice cakes and starting another business supported by clean water.
“Clean water ensures our children remain healthy. Our efforts to grow food have been significantly boosted thanks to an abundance of clean water.”

Healing, health and hope
Supporting networks of rural health clinics keeps people healthy, enabling them to build the better lives they envision for themselves. Health supports, like medical supplies, equipment, and over-the-counter medications, support the efforts of doctors and nurses working to diagnose and treat injuries and illnesses in a timely manner. In cases of debilitating or life-threatening diseases, a well-stocked medical clinic is a lifesaver for families.

FOOD SECURITY LEADS TO INCOME SECURITY
Champika and her family remember the desperate days when work was scarce and life had become even more challenging than usual in her rural community in Sri Lanka. “Some days, the best I could earn with my sewing was just 500 Rupees ($2 CAD). My husband was out of work because the man he worked for closed his business. We couldn’t afford even three simple meals a day,” says Champika.
One day, Champika heard about our home vegetable gardening training program that helps women learn new skills. She signed up immediately. After attending just a few trainings, Champika quickly realized the many benefits of home gardens: a reliable source of nutritious food, protection from rising food costs, and the opportunity to earn a living. “I applied for a loan and started cultivating vegetables.
My garden was a great success. Today, we have all the nutritious vegetables we need, and we’re selling vegetables at the market,” says Champika, whose family is now healthy, well-fed, and financially secure. Champika plans to build on her success by expanding into chicken farming.
“My vegetable garden helped overcome our financial difficulties and continues to provide us with all the nutritious food we need.”

BUILDING A BUSINESS TO BUILD A LIFE
Like many women in remote villages, Basri Bibi has the heart of an entrepreneur. However, a lack of resources in her community in Pakistan, like training and start-up loans, made her vision of being financially secure, rather than a low-wage domestic servant with no job security, unattainable.
Basri heard about our community-based program that supports women in their efforts to create sustainable, reliable incomes. “I signed up for the program right away. The training I received enabled me to create a business plan and get the funding I needed to start my own tailoring business,” says Basri.
The first step was the purchase of the sewing machine that she’d use to build her business. It didn’t take long for Basri to make a healthy profit. “I used my first profit to invest in my daughter, Ayesha, so she could start a small business too,” says Basri. Following her mother’s lead, Ayesha is investing in herself, turning her profits into savings so she can go to university. Within three months, Basri’s family income had increased by an impressive 30 percent and continues to grow today.
“Within 3 months of starting my small business, our family income increased by 30 percent.”
