Building Community Ties

Profound changes are happening in every community HOPE works with. From these communities come powerful stories of transformation. Building Community Ties does more than tell these stories, it invites you to be a part of them.

HOPE's Building Community Ties program connects you to families in Ethiopia, India, and the Philippines who are breaking the cycle of poverty through community led initiatives.

Your monthly support will meet the immediate and long-term needs of adults and children living in poverty to ensure that the changes they are making today last a lifetime.

ETHIOPIA: Support a Self-help Group

You, along with a small community of Canadians have the opportunity to change the lives of 20 women and their families. With your monthly gift of $30, a group of 20 women will be able to join a Self Help Group. These groups are made up of 15-20 like-minded women who come together to learn new skills, support each other in starting small businesses, and solve challenges faced by their community. Through your support, these women will develop a plan, borrow a small amount of money, and get to work making their dreams a reality.

Once they have established their businesses and are earning a regular income, they can return the loan to their self-help group, which will provide another family with a similar opportunity.

As you support a Self-help Group in Ethiopia, you will receive:

  • A profile and photo of the specific group your gift supports
  • Detailed information about project and the community in which the self-help group exists
  • Two updates a year on the group's progress!

ETHIOPIA: Support an Orphaned Child

HIV/AIDS continues to take its toll on children and their families in Ethiopia, especially in the country's capital, Addis Ababa.

Half a million children in Ethiopia have become orphans as a result of losing their parents to AIDS. Beyond the trauma of losing their parents, orphaned children find themselves without shelter, food, education, or basic care.

Your support of $40 per month will ensure an orphaned child in Addis Ababa has everything they need for a stable and safe childhood, and the support they need to dream of a different future.

Care and shelter
Your support ensures children have care, nutrition, home economics, and health check-ups within a nurturing home – often with a relative caring for the child. Skills training for the guardian parents of the child, as well as regular visits from a social worker, enable guardian parents to meet the unique needs of an orphaned child within their family.

Nutritious food
Children are provided with nutritious food, especially when guardian families are struggling to make ends meet themselves.

Education & Training
Tuition fees, school books and supplies will support your child’s education. Vocational and life skills training (for an older child) gives youth the skills needed to make good decisions and earn a good income when they enter the workforce.

Opportunities
After-school clubs and activities provide a safe place to play and study.

As you support a child in Ethiopia, you will receive:

  • A profile and photo of a child
  • Detailed information about the program and the community in which the child lives
  • Annual updates about how the child is doing

Support a Community in India

Poverty weighs heavily on families in India, especially in the rural areas. Impoverished families, most of whom earn less than $2 a day, are barely able to survive, much less work their way out of the poverty.

Your support of $30 per month will ensure that families have the opportunity to vastly improve their lives and create a better future for their children and their community.

Creating a Stable Local Economy
You, along with a small community of Canadians have the opportunity to change the lives of 20 women and their families. With your monthly gift of $30, a group of 15 women will be able to join a Self Help Group.

The entire community will benefit from the integration of women into the economy, local leadership and decision making.

Holistic Support for Each Family
Your gift intends to change the lives of an entire community, beginning with families. Each family will receive a housing grant to upgrade and build an adequate home that is safe and comfortable. With an adequate refuge, families can now protect themselves from the elements and stay healthy. Community health centres will also be established that allow them to access health care and receive training for better family health, hygiene, and sanitation. Agricultural training and community irrigation systems will be created as well to enable farmers to grow more food and provide better nutrition for their families.

As you support a community in India, you will receive:

  • A profile and photo of the specific community your gift supports
  • Detailed information about the project and the community
  • Two updates a year on the community’s progress!

Building Family Ties FAQ

Can I write to the child or community I support?
Yes. They would love to receive letters and photographs from you. When writing, send your correspondence to HOPE International Development Agency and we will forward it on!

How long do I support a child or community?
The Building Community Ties program is generally a commitment of 5 years. Occasionally, circumstances of your child or community may change and your support will no longer be needed for them. In this case, we will help set you up with another child or community.

Is it possible for me to support more than one community or child?
Absolutely! How many families, children or communities you choose to support is an individual choice, and many Building Community Ties supporters choose to take part in multiple projects.

Can I receive reports and new information electronically to save paper to keep costs as low as possible?
Yes. If you prefer, progress reports can be delivered to you online via email. Please call 1-866-525-4673 to request this option.

Why do some projects have higher monthly rates than others?
Your support to children and communities is based on their needs identified by our partners in different countries. Because each country has programs designed to meet differing needs, the costs are reflective of the type of work being done.

How can I help reduce payment administration costs?
To help us reduce administration costs, and use your money most effectively to help families abroad, you can select a payment method of Monthly Credit Card or Direct Withdrawl to a Savings/Chequing account.
